Une délégation de l’INP-ENSEEIHT lauréate à la cérémonie de remise de prix de la 1ère édition de la conférence Sorbonne International Model United Nations (SIMUN)

Une délégation de l’INP-ENSEEIHT a été primée à la cérémonie de remise de prix qui clôtura la 1ère édition de la conférence Sorbonne International Model United Nations ou SIMUN prévue du 11 au 14 avril aux Centres Panthéon et Sorbonne de l’université prestigieuse de Paris. Un 1er prix Best Delegate - Knowledge & Excellence - in recognition of their change-driving, achievements and innovation, a été décerné à Ethan Surin, élève ingénieur de 1ère année sous statut d’étudiant du département Mécanique des Fluides, Energétique et Environnement (MFEE FISE), et un 2ème prix Distinguished Diplomat in recognition of their exceptional diplomacy, negotiation skills and professionalism a été décerné à Killian Plantin, élève ingénieur de 1ère année sous statut d’apprentissage du département Électronique, Énergie Électrique et Automatique (3EA FISA). La délégation SIMUN de l’INP-ENSEEIHT comportait 7 élèves ingénieurs L3 et M1 (voir leurs commentaires en fin d'article), Maxime Bontemps, Arthur Creola, Rémi Ducret, Camille Jarrousse, Amandine Pinto Das Neves, Killian Plantin et Ethan Surin, accompagnés par les 2 directeurs enseignants du Soft Skills Center, Ben Hanson et Alexandra Hull. 

Destinés à 200 étudiants pluridisciplinaires d’universités françaises et étrangères, ces 3 jours de modélisation de comités internationaux des Nations unies (Model United Nations ou MUN) ont été riches en enseignements. Les discussions avaient lieu en langue anglaise et l’objectif était d’aboutir à une résolution commune afin que chaque pays puisse défendre et valoriser ses intérêts, tout en s’améliorant. Ce SIMUN inaugural marque 10 années de pratique régulière estudiantine de jeu de rôle MUN à la Sorbonne où, pendant les conférences, les élèves peuvent endosser le rôle de diplomate et représenter un pays qui n’est pas le leur. La thématique parmi les grands enjeux mondiaux définie pour le SIMUN fut Omnibus sapientia, unicuique excellentia or knowledge for all, excellence for each. Affecté à 1 des 9 commissions de travail (United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UN Women, International Olympic Committee, Organisation Mondiale de la Santé, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Judiciary Crisis Committee, United Nations Security Council, Bicameral Crisis of the Roman Republic A et B), selon ses appétences et niveau de compétence, chaque individu a été désigné comme représentant diplomate d’un état membre. Pendant les 3 jours, chaque diplomate a pu s’exprimer pour défendre la position politique de son pays sur un sujet donné, exposer une problématique qui touche le pays et proposer des solutions pour améliorer la situation du pays. Avant d’accepter une résolution, les diplomates ont déposé des amendements pour améliorer des propositions et ont voté pour les rectifier ou les supprimer. En fin de séance, les diplomates ont réuni les mesures que les pays s’engagent à suivre pour améliorer une situation (santé, sécurité, pollution, immigration, éducation, commerce, équité, inclusion, diversité, etc.).

L’expérience du SIMUN a été l’occasion pour les élèves ingénieurs de l’INP-ENSEEIHT de s’intéresser aux grandes problématiques et aux questions géopolitiques du monde contemporain, en communiquant en anglais et d’autres langues, avec les étudiants multidisciplinaires provenant des quatre coins du globe. Ce MUN a été un évènement d’excellence pour développer de nombreuses compétences transversales ou soft skills, telles que l’écoute, la collaboration et le travail en équipe, la négociation, la communication orale et écrite, l’agilité, la recherche d’informations, la pensée critique et analytique, la persuasion, la médiation et l’entente cordiale, l’éloquence, et l’empathie. Les jurys ont surtout apprécié la persévérance, la rigueur et la créativité des 2 élèves ingénieurs de l’ENSEEIHT lauréats et, notamment, leur capacité à motiver et à fédérer leur groupe pendant des moments difficiles tout au long des trois jours, afin d’atteindre, et même dépasser, les objectifs fixés.

Ravie de cette première expérience, la délégation de l’ENSEEIHT compte développer ses activités MUN, d’abord en collaborant avec la Fédération pour la Diplomatie et les Nations Unies (FDNU), une organisation non gouvernementale étudiante, et les élèves du Bureau du Développement Durable (BDD) de l’ENSEEIHT, afin d’organiser le 1er France MUN (FMUN), prévu à l’INP-ENSEEIHT Toulouse du 24 au 28 juin 2024, et dont la thématique est Beyond Borders : Bridging Nations through International Cooperation. Ensuite, en co-construction avec les élèves et pour soutenir des entraînements aux débats de type MUN et préparer des délégations futures, le programme pédagogique proposé par le Soft Skills Center sera mis à jour pour 2024-2025. Pour capitaliser sur cette dynamique vertueuse, inspirer les étudiants futurs et pérenniser cette activité pédagogique, une délégation d’élèves et d’enseignants du Soft Skills Center souhaiterait participer à son premier MUN à l’étranger dès 2025 : pourquoi pas en février au MUN de l’University College London, ou en juin au M.V.MUN Rome, ou en octobre à l’IE University MUN Madrid ?

La délégation élèves-enseignants de l’INP-ENSEEIHT tient à remercier son entourage pour son soutien et son implication dans l’élaboration de ce projet, notamment les élèves du Bureau du Développement Durable (BDD), les acteurs du dispositif de la Dynamique Pédagogique (DyP), et les alumni du fonds de dotation N7Dev.

Paroles d’élèves :

Ethan : For me the SIMUN was a breathtaking experience. It was a memorable moment that allowed all of us to discover other ways of acting, of expressing ourselves, of learning to collaborate, and of making concessions. The SIMUN offered the possibility of a new perspective showing us that, as future engineers, we can also get involved in the international negotiation scene. But above all, it was a place of remarkable encounters with students from all backgrounds. It was a meeting full of emotion and humanity, which, moreover, took place in a breathtaking location.

Amandine : The SIMUN was a unique experience. It went far beyond what I expected in terms of academic learning, but also in terms of personal challenge. The SIMUN allowed us to discover an entire world of negotiation and diplomacy, which was a great opportunity for us to learn about the global context. On top of that, the SIMUN was a big theater course where we all learnt to express ourselves and be persuasive in front of an audience: qualities that are crucial for our future lives as engineers.

Arthur : The SIMUN was overwhelming and beyond all my expectations. As engineering students we can get stuck in scientific courses and lose the vision that there are not only engineers but also people from various backgrounds, who think differently, and who could help us be better at expressing our ideas. At the SIMUN the majority of the students came from abroad and they all had completely different academic experiences from each other. This made the debates and talks very fulfilling and interesting on every level. This experience made us go outside our comfort zone for 3 days as we had to deal with subjects that we are not used to working on. It was a real sigh of relief to learn with very kind, bright people about ways of cooperating and debating. And, as Ethan said, the meetings were full of emotions and humanity which was remarkable.

Camille : For me the SIMUN has been the opportunity to step outside the engineering world and take a critical look at relations between nations and how they impact the daily lives of millions of people. It was an extremely stimulating experience, both intellectually and socially. I had the incredible chance to meet students from backgrounds which were completely different from mine, and I was reassured to see that these individuals are enlightened people who will be the diplomats of tomorrow. I look forward to participating in another MUN in the future.

Killian : As an engineering student, I only recently discovered the concept of a Model United Nations, and the vibrant and friendly atmosphere of the SIMUN set the perfect conditions to learn the basics of debating and diplomacy. I am proud to have represented our engineering school as part of our ENSEEIHT delegation. During these three days in the beautiful, historic Sorbonne University, we took part in passionate debates presided over by very professional yet fun chairpeople. From compromise to consensus, negotiations and lobbying, from conflicting opinions to voting for common resolutions, SIMUN was a perfect introduction to the intricate world of international relations. We were lucky enough to meet and become friends with other students from all over the world, and this variety of cultures, academic backgrounds and personalities made these days even more special. SIMUN 2024 was a great experience during which I discovered a newfound passion for diplomacy and international relations. This was my first MUN, but it definitely won’t be the last.

Rémi : The SIMUN was an outstanding experience not only from a professional and academic perspective but also from a personal standpoint. In a wonderful environment, it was a rewarding moment in a brand new non-scientific world framework ruled by diplomatic language and official codes of conduct. I recommend Model United Nations to engineering students because, at the very least, it can allow us to break out of the isolation and comfort bubble we can find ourselves in during our studies.

Maxime : This MUN was an extremely enriching experience for me. As someone who enjoys debating, I greatly appreciated engaging my ideas with others. It was a complete departure from what we typically do in engineering school: different topics, different people, and a different context. Additionally, the setting of the Sorbonne, combined with the protocol followed during the MUN, creates an atmosphere that is both impressive and invigorating. It was a pleasure to represent N7 with my classmates at this event, and I’m already thinking about the next MUN I could participate in.
